In my recovery, I needed a lot of advice. This need for advice continued as I grew in my recovery and walk with Jesus. In Joshua 23:6-13, Joshua gives Israel his final words of advice for living in the promised land. Joshua’s advice is not only relevant to Israel but especially to those of us on a journey of recovery.
Joshua’s first piece of advice for early recovery is to be strong or courageous (Joshua 23:6). Courage is foundational to recovery. It's not the absence of fear but the resolve to confront adversity head-on. Just as Joshua faced daunting battles, individuals in recovery face their own inner and outer conflicts. Embracing courage means stepping into the discomfort of change, acknowledging the mess, and trusting in a higher power-Jesus-for strength to begin the process of recovery.
Joshua’s next piece of advice is to follow instructions (Joshua 23:6). Recovery often involves seeking guidance from those ahead of us, adhering to treatment plans, and embracing principles that promote healing. Joshua’s advice to follow instructions without deviation echoes the importance of consistency and discipline in recovery. Whether it’s attending support meetings, reading the Bible, or committing to therapy, staying on course is crucial.
Joshua’s third piece of advice is to be careful who you surround yourself with (Joshua 23:7). In recovery, the company we keep profoundly influences our progress. Surrounding oneself with supportive, understanding individuals is vital. These relationships provide strength during moments of weakness, accountability in times of temptation, and a sense of community essential for long-term recovery. Show me your friends and I’ll show you your future! Be strong & courageous in seeking out help and following their guidance.
The fourth piece of advice from Joshua is to be faithful to your why (Joshua 23:8). What is your "why"? When challenges arise, and they will, your "why" will keep you grounded and focused. In recovery, it's crucial to remember why you started this journey. Is your why to get your kids, rebuild relationships, or fulfill your legal obligations? My “why” was that I had gotten tired of going to jail and starting over. Stay true to and cling tightly to your motivation and purpose for recovery.
Joshua’s final piece of advice is to remove anything hindering your progress and to beware of the snares and traps that can derail your progress (Joshua 23:9-13). Joshua assures the Israelites that with God's help, they will overcome. Similarly, in recovery, identifying and eliminating barriers such as addictive behaviors, negative thought patterns, and toxic relationships is essential. This process requires introspection, honesty, and the willingness to confront uncomfortable truths. Clearing these obstacles paves the way for personal growth and lasting sobriety. In recovery, snares & traps will come in many forms like old habits, self-sabotaging thoughts, or environments that trigger cravings. Staying mindful and aware helps us recognize these dangers and avoid slipping back into harmful patterns.
Joshua’s timeless advice offers practical insights for navigating the complexities of addiction recovery today. By being courageous, following guidance, fostering supportive relationships, remembering your “why”, overcoming obstacles, and avoiding snares & traps, we empower ourselves to achieve lasting healing and transformation. Just as Joshua led his people to a promised land, these principles can guide us toward a life of freedom, resilience, and fulfillment beyond addiction. Remember, God is with you, fighting for you, and guiding you every step of the way. May we all cling tightly to Him and find the strength and courage to continue on the path to recovery.
